It's hard to know where to start when describing the almost endless activities available in Grass Valley/Nevada City & the surrounding area. We are approximately 1 hour drive to Sacramento or Lake Tahoe. Numerous excellent lakes, rivers & streams within minutes, wineries/wine tasting, museums, antique shops & specialty shops galore, walking tours, Empire Mine State Park (less than a mile), County fairgrounds activities, fly fishing, excellent local restaurants, etc., etc., etc. Even snow play activities are nearby in the winter, along with skiing less than an hour away. COME STAY & PLAY!!!!
An afternoon drive north up Hwy 49 through Downieville & Sierra City to Truckee in the late Summer & Fall is a real treat with the amazing Fall colors, which equal (some say surpass), the Northeastern United States. It's an easy, leisurely, drive with several excellent restaurants along the way. Or just bring your own goodies for a picnic along the river which meanders beside the Highway much of the way.
We also highly recommend the Empire Mine State Park & especially the tour on weekends featuring the incredible rock-walled home built by the mine owner in the late 1800s & now featured on the tour with docents in period costume & character conducting the tours. Well worth your time. Even the kids would enjoy!!!
