Additional information about surrounding area and attractions:
Without a doubt, Squaw Valley is the best ski area in the far West. The many ski mountains are expansive, very easy to access and offer un-matched challenges to advanced skiers yet it the same context, friendly avenues for beginners and intermediate skiers. By staying in the Valley, visitors avoid traffic/winter driving, and can enjoy many winter activities; dining at a variety of restaurants, browsing the shops in the Village or the Resort at Squaw Creek, or even sampling the night life at a variety of clubs and bars.
Your really don’t have to leave the Valley, but Tahoe City and the West shore are only 7 miles away offering winter activities, dining, shopping, etc. Truckee, a vintage and restored railroad town, is 10 miles, and provides a good afternoon or evening outing. The drive in either of these directions is quite scenic, winding through a canyon viewing the mountains and the Truckee River. Alpine Meadows is a good, primarily intermediate ski area and is only 8 miles away.
