Rich with the history of Mexico's revolution, the heartland is a treasury of colonial towns-Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Queretaro, Morelia, and Patzcuaro, among others-whose residents lead quiet, largely traditional lives. Even in San Miguel de Allende, an American art colony and home to a well-known language institute, women wash their clothes and gossip at the local lavandaria as they have for hundreds of years. You can visit historic sites or hot springs in easy day trips; see the famous botanical gardens; enjoy ecotourism in the region; take intensive Spanish lessons; play golf, swim, go horseback riding or hiking. Rates vary according to season and number of guests. $1500 p wk high season Jan - March, July - September, for 6 guests. From $850-$1500 off-season. $2500 Christmas, New Year. Add 5% hotel tax, $500 security deposit. All rates include maid's services and cooking. If a reservation is cancelled, money is refunded only if replacement guests can be found for the same time period, less 10% administration fees. See my website for updates and special offers.
