Granada
Founded in 1524, Granada enjoys the distinction of being the oldest colonial city in the Americas. Nestled on the expansive shore of Lake Nicaragua, the little town of Granada sparkles like a Spanish-colonial gem – an architectural and cultural wonderland where the daily rituals and pace of life seem little changed from the 1800s. Cobblestone streets, colorful colonial houses, and echoing church bells have made Granada a favorite for expats seeking sanctuary from the mayhem of modern life. It is about 50 minutes drive from the International Airport. The city of Granada was built by the Spaniards on the border of Lake Nicaragua, with 365 islands (one for each day of the year) and Mombacho Volcano on the other side.
It is a paradise for fishing, ecoturism and the 'in' city in America, with a European flavour and the relaxation of the tropics. Iglesia San Francisco: The convent is a unique Granada landmark that is rich in history, from its founding to the days of William Walker. The convent features a museum that is worth seeing as well. Parque Central (Parque Colon): Within walking distance of the hotel, the park is the heart of Granada. Here, you can get a great feel for what Granada is all about. One can see merchants, restaurants, a cathedral, horse drawn carriages and great colonial architecture. Stop by and buy souvenirs, eat Nicaraguan food or just relax at the park with the locals.
Nicaragua, the land of sun, lakes, and volcanoes, is the largest but most sparsely populated nation in Central America. With an area of approximately 130,000 square kilometers, it is slightly larger than New York State. However, it has a relatively small population of only about 4.5 million. Nicaragua is bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the east, the Pacific Ocean on the west, Costa Rica on the south and Honduras on the north. Western Nicaragua is mountainous, with fertile valleys. Two big lakes, Nicaragua and Managua, are connected by the Tipitapa River.
