Description of surrounding area and attractions
Things to Do in Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake is a place for all seasons. Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains and surrounded by National Forest Land, it is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities below. With 300 bright sunny days a year and crisp alpine air, Big Bear is a little bit of paradise just 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
In summer, escape the heat of the southland with temperatures that average roughly 72 degrees during the day, dropping to 45 degrees at night. In winter, enjoy the mountains under snow, with about 120 inches of snowfall and temperatures in the low 40s during the day, mid 20s at night.
Winter Fun for All:
The Lodge is just minutes away from the ski resorts Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. You can choose from 75 trails, 20 lifts, 4 high speed chairs, and 7 snowboard parks. Whatever your level, downhill or cross-country, our ski resorts have something for you. Not interested in skis & boards? Visit the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain where you can zoom down the mountain on their bobsled track or have a fun time sliding down the slopes on your very own inner tube.
The local skis areas are generally open from Thanksgiving to Easter, depending on snow and weather conditions. Both ski areas make snow to supplement what Mother Nature brings. Rental equipment is available at the mountain or from one of many shops in town.
Activities on Big Bear Lake:
Big Bear's fresh water lake measures 8 miles long and approximately one mile across at its widest point. It is perfect for swimming, water-skiing, sailing, fishing and other water sports. It has a maximum depth of 72 feet and over 23 miles of shoreline. The powers that be require our marinas to close in early December in order to protect the Bald Eagle population that winters in Big Bear Valley.
Paddle, pontoon, sail or power boats can all be rented at many of the marinas that Big Bear Lake's shoreline. Private boat permits are required and can be purchased at any marina.
Bass, trout and catfish are abundant in the lake. Licenses and supplies can be purchased at sporting goods stores and at any of our marinas.
An Outdoor Adventure at Every Turn:
Big Bear also offers a whole host of outdoor activities off the lake -- hiking, mountain biking, off-roading, horseback riding, tennis, even our very own golf course. The hills and mountains that surround Big Bear Lake offer trails with spectacular views of the lake and forest. Just 2 miles up the Cougar Crest Trail brings you to the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail which connects Mexico with Canada. Visit the Discovery Center where you will find helpful people with great information and tons of ideas to help you take advantage of our majestic mountains. Pedal scenic bike trails, ride the Sky Chair, compete on the Bear Mountain BMX track or just coast along the North Shore bike path. Bring your own bike or rent one in town....no problem. Off-roading is a favorite pastime here in Big Bear and we have plenty of options for everyone from the novice to the most advanced explorer. Explore our forest on horseback with help from one of our local riding stables. Enjoy a 9-hole round of golf (April through November weather permitting) on a regulation course, tune up that swing at the driving range, or take the whole family for a round of miniature golf. Still looking for something to do? Why not pay a visit to the Moonridge Zoo and check out their resident Grizzly Bear Family, Bald Eagles, and much much more.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
